Virginia Dwan: a Patron and Gallery Owner Passes Away at 90!
Virginia Dwan claimed that she didn’t much enjoy discussing art.
- However, she significantly influenced art in the 1960s and 1970s through her galleries in New York and Los Angeles and funding artists, particularly Land artists like Michael Heizer and Robert Smithson.
- Dwan, who passed away from cancer on September 5 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 90, had quit her art studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and started her gallery.
- In 1959, it wasn’t easy to find or maintain a women-owned gallery. Dwan reportedly ordered her spouse to refrain from going to parties with her so that no one would think he was the gallery owner.
