Jeff Cook Death Statement At 73 – What Do You Need To Know!
After a long illness, Alabama founding member and lead guitarist Jeff Cook died Tuesday at his vacation home in Destin, Florida. Cook’s spokesman confirmed the death. He was 73.
- Born Jeffrey Alan Cook on Aug. 27, 1949, in Fort Payne, Alabama, his youthful musical ambitions would propel him to the top of the country charts many times with Alabama classics including “Mountain Music,” “Take Me Down,” “Love in the First Degree,” and “Dixieland Delight.”
- Cook and his cousins, vocalist Randy Owen and bassist Teddy Gentry, founded Wildcountry, a Southern hit. They moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to play at the Bowery, where they were popular.
- In 1977, Alabama was renamed and added full-time drummer Mark Herndon, finding popularity in country music.
- RCA gave the ensemble eight Number One hits, including “Tennessee River,” “Feels So Right,” and “Mountain Music.” “Dixieland Delight,” “Song of the South,” and “I’m in a Hurry (and Don’t Know Why)” are among their more than 30 Number One country singles, including one per year from 1980 through 1993. In 1982, 1983, and 1984, they won the CMA’s Entertainer of the Year Award.
- In Alabama, Cook played guitar, keyboards, fiddle, mandolin, and vocal harmonies to Owen’s lead melodies. He used a double-neck electric guitar to add rock & roll theatrics to country music. After retiring, the band was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2013, they toured without Herndon.

Cook studied radio and electronic technology at Gadsden State Community College after earning his broadcaster’s license at 14. He collaborated with other aspiring musicians at Cook Sound Studios, his Fort Payne home studio. From 2008 to 2011, Cook released several solo albums, including Just Pickin’ and 2 Rock 4 Country.
- Cook announced his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2017 after being diagnosed in 2012. He toured with Alabama until 2018 when he retired from traveling.
- Brad Paisley, who sang “Old Alabama” with Alabama, recalled Cook on social media. “Recording and jamming with you guys is a life highlight. “You faced this dreadful cancer with grace, Jeff,” Paisley wrote. I feel for your wife, boys, and band. You’re missed.”
