• Only a few hours after his son won the Xfinity Series championship on Sunday morning, Coy Gibbs, the vice chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing for his NFL and NASCAR Hall of Fame father, passed away. He was 49.
• “Coy Gibbs, the co-owner, passed away peacefully yesterday night, Joe Gibbs Racing has confirmed with deep grief. The family requests privacy at this time and appreciates all thoughts and prayers, the team said in a statement issued just before the start of the NASCAR season finale.
• Both of Joe Gibbs’ sons have passed away. J.D. Gibbs passed away in 2019 at the age of 49 from a degenerative neurological condition. Coy Gibbs took over as vice chairman of the family-run NASCAR corporation from his elder brother.
• “We are devastated by Coy Gibbs’ terrible passing. Joe, Pat, Heather, the Gibbs family, and everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing have my sincere condolences on the passing of Coy, a genuine friend, and racer, on behalf of the France family and all of NASCAR, said Jim France, chairman, and CEO of NASCAR.
• Before the start of the Cup championship race on Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, where JGR’s Christopher Bell was vying for the title, NASCAR observed a moment of mourning for Coy Gibbs. After 15 years with the team, Kyle Busch was in his final race, and as the race was about to begin, he was sobbing on the pit road.
• JGR driver Denny Hamlin wrote, “Today we will do what we don’t want to do, but we will come together as a family and race for the name on our breast.”

J.D. was distinct because he embraced everyone. “J.D. was my dad,” I said, Coy. He was my dad when I joined the series, so losing him affects the culture, and we must regain it.
• Joe and Coy Gibbs defended their young driver after he was booed at Martinsville and Phoenix. Ty Gibbs apologized before defeating Noah Gragson.
• Gragson tweeted “Prayers to the Gibbs family” after congratulating Ty Gibbs on Saturday’s championship.
• Coy Gibbs played linebacker at Stanford from 1991-1994 and was his father’s offensive quality control assistant in Washington. Gibbs raced in the NASCAR Busch Series and Trucks Series before helping his father create Joe Gibbs Racing Motocross in 2007.

Coy Gibbs lived in Cornelius, North Carolina, with his wife Heather and four children.
